So we’re adding another 6,000 square feet to the Japan House, which will dynamically change what we can offer in terms of how we can offer it. And that main room is our classroom, that main room is the seating area for tea ceremony, that main room is a meeting room. And in this annex, we will have a designated classroom, so we do not have to constantly be changing out our main room in our current space. We will also have a fully accessible tea room, which has been a dream of mine. We welcome classes and community organizations for tea ceremonies and garden tours for our regularly scheduled times or at other times. Most of the time Japan House is only open for our special events.
Japan House is located in Urbana, Illinois on the campus of the University of Illinois, near the Arboretum and the Vet Med complex, just south of Kirby/Florida Avenue on Lincoln Avenue. Tours and tea ceremonies are available throughout the year by appointment only. Although Gunji Sensei is also retired, she continues to teach classes at Japan House and also in Rockford, Illinois. Although Sato Sensei is retired, he still teaches classes at Japan House and in Chicago and gives lectures all over the country. In 1992, Shozo Sato retired from teaching and being Director of the original Japan House. He, and his wife Alice, moved to Northern California where he established the Center for Japanese Art.
Gunji-Ballsrud said that Sato could teach everything except for tea ceremonies. They required a lot of setup and it was difficult for Sato to set up temporary make-shift tea rooms. Since then, Japan House has blossomed into a large program and has classes that — according to current director Jennifer Gunji-Ballsrud — have filled up within 30 seconds of registration opening. I’ve always said my dream company is a position at Nintendo, and they always have positions for people to go back and forth between America and Japan. I can take classes in those exact fields to apply toward my future career. When Westerners think of Japanese gardens, it is usually only one garden that comes to mind, an area of raked sand or crushed rock interspersed with a few large rocks and a scarcity of plants, or none at all.
